Racing to a red light – F1 2020 season postponed due to corona virus outbreak. Expected to begin at end of May
As one member of the Mclaren Formula 1 team tested for corona virus, the entire F1 2020 season has been postponed. Though FIA will regularly review the situation, as of now the 2020 season is expected to begin at end of May.
Mclaren confirmed on 12 March 2020 that their team member has been tested positive for Corona virus and withdrew from the competition. Later that evening, FIA and 9 team principals met and came to a conclusion that the race cannot happen.
This decision was proactively implemented by the FIA. Even though each race has a positive impact on the economy of both the country where it is held and the organizers, the safety of the audience, teams and officials took priority. That said, it will never know whether this decision was taken after pressure from the governments of the hosting countries.
The FIA is is relying on inputs of WHO (World Health Organization) and concerned governments to decide on the fate of the F1 2020 Season.
Also, at a time when fear of the virus has gripped everyone’s attention, the races would not have been able to draw fans as they usually do. In this situation, when all decisions are bad for business, the best decision is the one which would be in favor of the people and their health
